Artist Statement: “Glitter Pig/Disco Hog”
“Glitter Pig/Disco Hog” is an immersive sculptural artwork that merges the realms of whimsy, spectacle, and introspection. Constructed using installation foam as its base material, meticulously caulked, and adorned with countless tiny cut mirror pieces, this rotating disco-ball mirrored wart hog head embodies a captivating fusion of contrasting elements.
Through this piece, I explore the duality of identity and the masks we wear in society. The glittering and reflective surface of the sculpture reflects not only the external world but also our own internal reflections, symbolizing the complexity of self-perception and the multifaceted nature of human existence.
The choice of a wart hog head as the central motif is deliberate, representing resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity. The wart hog’s inherent strength and tenacity resonate with the human experience, reminding us of our capacity to navigate challenges and overcome obstacles.
The use of installation foam, caulk, and mirrored fragments in the creation process serves as a metaphorical exploration of the transformative power of art. The raw, industrial nature of these materials juxtaposed with the delicate shimmer of the mirrored pieces invites contemplation on the interplay between fragility and strength, chaos and order.
As the sculpture rotates, casting fragments of light and kaleidoscopic patterns across its surroundings, it invites viewers to engage in a sensory dialogue. The ever-changing reflections and dynamic presence of “Glitter Pig/Disco Hog” offer an invitation to question one’s own perceptions, challenge preconceived notions, and embrace the transformative potential of self-expression.
Ultimately, this artwork celebrates the joy and liberation found in embracing one’s authentic self, even in the face of societal expectations and pressures. “Glitter Pig/Disco Hog” serves as a visual reminder that self-discovery and personal growth often arise from embracing the contradictions and complexities of our own identities.
By creating this piece, I hope to evoke a sense of wonder, playfulness, and self-reflection in the viewer. It is my sincere desire that “Glitter Pig/Disco Hog” sparks conversations, provokes thought, and invites a deeper exploration of the human experience and the masks we wear.
