Karen Elshout

In 2020 my focus has pivoted to my sculpture. I work primarily in metal, using found objects that inspire me.

I’ve been a photojournalist for 40 years!  After 3 decades on staff at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and nine years covering the legal community for Missouri Lawyers Weekly, I have transitioned into freelance work.

My work has appeared in Life, Time, Newsweek, and has won many awards, including the international competition, Pictures of the Year, with a first place in general news for a photograph from a story on the homeless.  My most recent accolade was from APME, first place photo story for my essay on the gun violence problem in our community.
