Michael Eastman is an American photographer best known for his painterly and luminous images of sweeping landscapes, interiors, and horses. Similar to the styles of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, his series Havana (1992-2002, 2010, 2014) depicts the decaying glamour of Cuban interior design and architecture with regal austerity. “I don’t really photograph sites over and over again,” Eastman has said of his practice. “I think photographs present themselves at certain times. The condition of the building, time of day, the light, the sky and my feeling at that moment.” Born in 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri, the artist is self-taught, and his work has appeared in critically acclaimed publications such as Time, Life, and American Photographer. His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the International Center of Photography in New York, among others. Eastman lives and works in St. Louis, MO.
