My work delves into the significance of food in connecting us and exploring human identity, desire, and experience. My works symbolize the complexity of life, encouraging contemplation of both visible and hidden facets.
Â
Inspired by birthday/wedding cakes and the joy of sharing food, I create realistic ceramic works resembling cakes, cupcakes, and other treats. Their lifelike appearance explores the concept of desire; the glossy sweetness of the icing entices the viewers and pulls them in for more.
Â
My use of clay evokes a sense of connection and personal experience through the hands-on experience of working with clay. I enjoy being able to feel and experience what I’m creating.
Â
My art is about the meaning of food – culture, memories, and identity. I also want to draw attention to the issue of food scarcity affecting some individuals. While we celebrate with cake, others struggle to get by. This contrast is represented in my work by the emptiness of the cake when turned over. Working in a bakery for six years has also inspired me tremendously. Decorating cakes is one of my favorite tasks at my job. I get to be a part of other people’s special days, and I wanted to translate that joy into clay.Â
